Beta Upsilon-Bryant University

Bid Day goofy pictures with Tupper, the Bryant University Bulldog!

There is something so great about a change of scenery and a change of pace. It's amazing how much we can take for granted when we see someone in passing every day (at the sorority chapter house, in class, on campus, at work, etc). All it takes is a few extra hours and some face to face conversation to learn so much more about your sisters. Put away your cellphones, turn off Facebook, Tweet to your followers that you'll be back the next day...and give the people you are with your FULL attention.

All ready to load up and head to the Colony Retreat!

That's exactly what the colony members at Bryant University did for a night, and I know I can speak for all of them when I say that they learned a lot about one another and will forever benefit from this time together.

AAC Member, Christina Pastorelli, teaching them how to play 'WAH!', fun game!

One of the [many] things I LOVE about AOII, is that our colony members have the opportunity to select their Chapter name and Sub-Motto. Many Greek organizations will assign them Alphabetically (Alpha to Omega and then Alpha Alpha, Alpha Beta etc.) or by the State the Chapter is in (Washington Alpha, Indiana Beta, etc). In AOII, this is not the case as you probably know! Once this Chapter Name is chosen, it stays with the chapter forever. Even if, for some reason, the chapter closes, it is still their name! For example, our chapter at Youngstown State University was just re-colonized and they still have their chapter Name of Phi Lambda that their original colony members chose years ago. Our chapter at the University of Washington is the Upsilon chapter, even though it is closed today. These are just a few examples!

Ready for bed...only 4 hours of talking before any sleeping happened! :)

At the retreat, the women voted on several things, but first and foremost their chapter name. After being presented with several options of chapter names chosen by the women, they voted and agreed on one that will go down in history as the Bryant University Chapter name and Sub-motto. After getting the approval from the Executive Board, the chapter at Bryant University is officially going to be Beta Upsilon! This was chosen for several reasons, one of which being that the BU of Beta Upsilon matches the BU of Bryant University. Additionally, the only other AOII chapter to ever have been in Rhode Island is the Beta chapter from Brown University (currently closed).

Getting snuggly with the Panda!

I take great pride in sharing my chapter of initiation's name and submotto, Alpha Gamma (Washington State University); always gracious, always genuine. I wish I could meet the women that chose this and hear their reasons for choosing it! I know the women of Beta Upsilon are beginning a legacy that will make every AOII proud. I can't wait for them to be initiated and know they will forever take pride in sharing their Chapter name and their affiliation with AOII.

A few of our dedicated AAC members!

Their submotto, also just approved by the Executive Board, is Zoun Stin Agapi-'Live in Love'. Thanks to the expertise of one of the colony members whose first language is Greek, they were able to find a translation that fit perfectly! (Thanks Maria!). To prove what a great group they are, I'd like to share that they chose this because they liked that it could be expanded upon in that you can 'Live in Love' with yourself, your sisters and your community. For a group that hasn't been initiated, they really do 'get it', don't they?

Some other awesome things about the colony experience, is that you get to be paired with a 'Twin'! Since they are the first members of the chapter, there is not a chance for them to have official 'Big Sisters'. Recently, we just revealed their 'twins' to them and it was such a great time! The women are so pumped to have a twin and are looking forward to the beginning of a very large 'family tree' with the addition of new members next year!

A few days after colonization they got to attend the Boston Area Alumnae Founder's Day Celebration!

Thanks to many alumnae in the Network 1 area, they have also all received letters from their 'Panda Pals' telling them about their AOII experience. They have enjoyed reading these and learning about the other AOII chapters and their members!

In merely 11 days the women will be installed as the 191st Chapter of AOII and the 36 colony members of the Beta Upsilon Chapter! I got chills and watery eyes just typing it. Seeing these women since I first arrived on campus in February has been such a heart-warming experience. I am not looking forward to April 15th when I have to say goodbye to them!

Here they are at their Colonization Ceremony with Executive Board VP Karen Galehan!

Stay tuned for more about our Beta Upsilon women! 'Like' us on Facebook...Alpha Omicron Pi at Bryant University or follow us on twitter @AOIIatBryantU :)

Don't forget to take some extra time to sit with a sister and ask her about her life...take an extra minute and walk to a sister's house to ask her a question instead of posting it on Facebook...call a sister instead of sending a text message! A little extra time and effort goes a long way :)

Our newest members at Cal State San Marcos!

We have another new AOII colony- at California State University San Marcos! To date, 63 new women have joined AOII and have become our newest members!

We have experienced many different events throughout this process. AOII recruited new members, had personal appointments and recruitment events with all of the potential new members, led a colonization ceremony, and the colony has already had two new member meetings!

But, it all had to start somewhere... and it starts with the University. The University has to see a need for a new greek organization due to an increase in size of their Greek Community, high retention rates in the greek community, and/or many other reasons. The Greek Leadership Council at CSUSM saw the increase in their membership and was looking for another organization to join their community! AOII applied, gave a presentation, and was invited to come to campus to start a brand, new chapter this Spring.

California State University San Marcos!

During the fall of 2011 and continuing into the early Spring this year, we began our public relations efforts through marketing and AOII materials. Then, we participated in the first round of formal recruitment at CSUSM. After the first round, AOII stepped out and let the other 3 women's groups finish recruiting. Beginning the day after bid day, AOII came out to campus with a table on CSUSM's library plaza and gathered names of interested women. We had the support of team AOII, which were members from the Greek Community at CSUSM. We chalked their campus, used A-frames, had team AOII t-shirts, and an informational session for all of the interested women! It was a busy two-week recruitment period, but we had a lot of support from the campus and had a great time! Here are some pictures from our recruitment period:

Then, after all of the interested women signed up, our colonization team came and we had personal appointments with all of the women! At night, we held recruitment events! The colonization team represented volunteers and staff of AOII. Rebecca Herman (XB VP), Linda Grandolfo (Foundation Board VP), Yvonne Sims (ND for Network 8), Jennifer Zoni (NS-D)Troy Leforge (Executive Director), Kara Hopper (Director of Extension and Public Relations), Molly Fenton (Assistant Director of Extension and New Chapter Development), Andrea Theobald (Assistant Director of Chapter Services), and us - the ELCs!

Our first event was, 'Picture Yourself in AOII' and the 2nd was our 'Black Tie Affair', an event similar to a preference ceremony that many of our chapters have. We were lucky enough to have two chapters, Sigma Phi and Chi Psi, that came out to help us recruit the women and assisted in the entire process!

After the recruitment recruitment events, Sunday was Bid Day! This was a huge celebration! It is so sweet to be in AOII! The new members enjoyed a candy, their new t-shirts and bid day bags!

That night, the colonization ceremony was led by Rebecca Herman and all of our new members officially began their journey with AOII. We had students from the Greek Leadership Council, parents, friends, and administrators and staff come to this event and support AOII.

These women are phenomenal new members of AOII. They have already had 2 new member meetings, 2 sisterhood events, participated in 2 philanthropy events, and a Greek broomball tournament! They are leaders on campus, volunteers in the community, and hold themselves to a high standard of character. These women bring leadership, experience, commitment and dedication to AOII - and we know they have a strong future ahead of them!

May 5, 2012 is the installation of this chapter and initiation of all the members! To keep learning about these new members, check out our facebook page!
