Last Saturday I celebrated my 23rd birthday and I’m pretty sure it was my first birthday being away from home, and definitely my first birthday out of the country. Several friends and members from several chapters I visited commented on how hard it must be to not be home for my birthday. Although I didn’t really know what to expect, the sisters at Kappa Lambda chapter in Calgary, Alberta, Canada made my day special and many friends, family members, and sisters made it a special week! Not only did I get to experience Preference with Kappa Lambda on my birthday, but they took me out for a delicious dinner (and dessert) to celebrate that evening. I received so many cards from members of my church at home, my family, my chapter’s CA, and my best friend during the rest of my week in Calgary, as well as an e-mail of a video of my chapter singing “Happy Birthday” to me in that week’s chapter meeting.
Dinner with some Kappa Lambdas!
On top of that, when I arrived at the Alpha Phi chapter house at Montana State University, I had a package waiting for me from my fellow ELCs and a card from my Sigma Alpha sisters, and a few days later another package arrived from my coworkers at HQ! While some may consider these straggling gifts “late” I just think of them as helping me celebrate longer! I was so blessed that although I was not able to spend my birthday with my family and friends at home, I was still able to be with my AOII sisters and felt the love from home even when I was so far away.
